StopDrink Network : Home

StopDrink Network is a non government organization (NGO) which was formed in 2003 and supported by Thai Health Promotion Foundation. Our primary objective is to reduce alcohol consumption in Thailand by working with community groups and other NGOs who are sharing the same vision.

We are working to raise public awareness of harmful consequences from alcohol consumption, to create long-term social value for alcohol drinking prevention, and to advocate for public policies on alcohol control independently from commercial interest.

Campaign Works Well

The vigorous campaign against giving alcoholic beverages as presents has led to a win-win situation for both givers and recipients during the festive season. Centre for Alcohol Study and the Stopdrink Network has gained momentum against alcohol gifts partly because the Alcohol Beverage Control Board introduced a ban on the distribution of liquor gift baskets on October 8, 2009. As the trend for non-alcohol baskets has naturally grown this year following an official ban, people can now hand them out without being perceived as offering cheap presents.

“How Ireland Addressed Alcohol Problems: Policy and Intervention”

On December 15th 2009, the International Collaborating Center, Stopdrink Network and Center for Alcohol Study had invited Dr. Ann Hope, Research Associate in the School of Social Work and Social Policy, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, and former National Alcohol Policy Advisor on alcohol issues, to share knowledge and experience in developing alcohol control policy in Ireland . There were 48 participants from Stopdrink Network’s partners and press attended the meeting.

Organic Laws Proposed by Govt. Will Impose Stringent Penalties

Once organic laws to a key anti-alcohol act come into effect in the near future, sale of alcohol to underage drinkers will be more strictly controlled and it will be mandatory to display warning signs on all bottles and cans.

Alcohol in Thailand

Alcohol consumption in Thailand has been growing rapidly in the recent years.
In 2004, 32.7 percents of Thai population age 15 and older drank alcohol.
The average of alcoholic beverage consumption was triple within 5 years during 1989-2003.
According to World Health Organization (WHO), Thailand's rank on alcoholic beverage consumption per capita moved up to the 40th in 2001 from the 50th in 1998.
Within a seven year period during 1996-2003, the number of female teens who drink alcohol had increased 6 times. For male teens, 21.23% of the population drink alcohol.
In February 2008, the first alcohol control law was enacted.
